"Mercedes coupes are usually hardtops, that is, no b-pillar. That means no convenient place to mount seatbelt. So, in 1982, they introduced the seat belt presenter, which motored the buckle out about a foot or so, making it a whole lot easier to grab. MB still uses this today." From

Fun, 'til the repair person tells you a new presenter motor costs $500.

Fun fact: BMW put this demon "seatbelt valet" in the E92. It is demonstrably true that it is the worst, most infuriating thing ever invited. It is powered through fuse 25. Immediately remove and discard fuse 25. That is all.

Same thing with the first gen Lexus SC (best pic I could find).

GM just did the logical thing in the late 90s, early 00s and mounted the belts straight to the seat. No expensive butler needed.

That's ugly. Sorry, but I can't stand it when car manufacturers do this. The most recent offender I think is the Toyota Sienna.

I like it because it means the belt moves with me when I adjust the seat.
I honestly think I like it there more than jutting out of the B-pillar.

On the BMW 4 series it goes back in once you have buckled your seat belt.

I know those silly little mechanical arms go back in, but I mean just a normal belt randomly sticking out of the pillar.

I dunno, pulled randomly off the interwebs, the original picture is a CTS-V though.

Those seats don't look very performance orientated.

I'm pretty sure those are the same seats that are in my dad's truck, dressed up with some leather and a bit of suede.

Upon further inspection, they have a bit more bolstering than the truck seats. Practically the same though.
Bad for performance, but oh-so comfortable.

I'm glad GM is mostly out of that era.

If they'd just update the goddamn Theta CUVs... Execept the Terrain, because I like that.

Terrible idea, because the seat back rest can break loose and then the seat belt is no use to you.
From the b pillar, its massive strong structure, it will stay there.

My dad's Silverado has those and the drivers side belt reel is about shot. Which means it makes tons of noise. Which means the seat needs replaced because as far as I know that's the only way to replace the reel.
